A slender first-innings lead of two runs went in vain as host Orissa lost to Bihar by six wickets on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today. This was Orissa’s 17th defeat in 21 Ranji Trophy match against Bihar.
Opting to bat after captain Madan Mohan Mohanty won the toss, Orissa were all out for 115. But the home team fought back to dismiss Bihar for 113. Babu R Rao and Vinod Gupta were instrumental in giving Orissa the first-innings lead, bagging five and four wickets respectively.
However, batting failure for the second time in the match cost Orissa dear as they were bowled out for 116 in the second essay. Ashish Mohanty and Babu Rao saved Orissa from complete collapse, hitting 40 and 26 respectively. Chasing 115 for victory, Bihar rode on a half-century by Ramesh Saxena to romp home comfortably, losing four wickets in the process.
